This
also brings up the question of : "Where do we keep "The Boat" when not
using it?"
They're waiting for you!
1. You can trailer and store your boat at your home in many communities up to about 25', some may require screening behind a solid fence or temporary landscaping. Some communities may have restrictions about boat trailers and have a designated storage area or prohibit them entirely. There are many boat launching sites and this is the most versatile method of storage
2. There are private boating clubs and storage at the club will require a membership as well as a storage fee. The Lauderdale Small Boat Club, near the Ft. Lauderdale Airport, is an example which has in the water dockage as well as trailer storage for up to a 30' boat. Social membership is $25/month plus dockage/storage is $3/ft/month after a onetime initiation fee of $500.
Other "Yacht Clubs" exist in the area and are much more expensive to join and maintain a boat at their facilities.
3. Dry storage is a very popular option for up to about 35' and there are many facilities. This is where the boat is removed from the water with a large fork lift and then stored inside on a rack. A call ahead appointment is necessary to have your boat lifted back into the water. Storage at these facilities will be about $10/ft/month and most are full boat service marinas.
4. In the water dockage is a option for larger than about 35' boats/yachts and there are many "boat yards" with this type storage as well as full service marinas along the intracoastal, canals, and tributaries. The price for dockage will vary greatly with the facility location and amenities, time of year, and the size and type of the boat.
5. There are opportunities for dockage behind an existing home located on the intracoastal, canal, or tributaries. These also will vary greatly with the time of year, location, and boat size. Some apartment buildings on the water also have dockage available, usually for the apartment owners, but some are open for others.
6. The ultimate is to have your boat docked or on davits behind your home on the intracoastal or accessible waterway. The cost for docking the boat is minimal, however the cost of the home is not.
Hope this gives you some guidelines. Tight lines, beautiful diving, smooth sailing, and sunny days are ahead.
